A Deep Dive Into Human Design Gates: The Building Blocks of Your Life’s Story
A Deep Dive Into Human Design Gates: The Building Blocks of Your Life’s Story
In Human Design, the gates are the fundamental building blocks of your energy and purpose. Each gate represents a specific energy, archetype, or potential within you. When activated, gates reveal unique aspects of your personality, gifts, and challenges, providing deep insight into how you’re designed to live your life.
Let’s explore what the gates are, how they’re determined, their role in your life’s story, and how clearing their energy can help you live more authentically.
What Are Human Design Gates?
Gates are specific points located within the nine centers of the Human Design bodygraph. Each gate corresponds to an energy archetype based on the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, making them part of a vast and ancient system of wisdom.
Defined Gates: When a gate is defined in your chart (colored in), it means that specific energy is consistently present in your life. These are related to the lessons you're learning and carried over from past lives, ancestors, and soul programs.
Undefined Gates: Undefined gates (white) indicate potential energy that may be influenced by external forces, such as transits, the people in your aura, the environment, land, etc.
Each gate forms one half of a channel. When both gates at either end of a channel are activated, the channel becomes defined, creating a steady flow of energy between the connected centers.
How Gates Tell the Story of Our Lives
The gates in your chart reveal your innate qualities, life themes, and areas where you are most naturally gifted. Together, they form a narrative of your soul’s purpose and how you’re meant to express yourself in the world.
For example:
Gate 10 (Behavior of the Self): Focuses on self-love and authenticity. This gate asks, “How can I express my true self?”
Gate 59 (Sexuality): Represents intimacy and connection, shaping how you bond with others.
These energies interact dynamically to shape your personal story, influencing everything from your relationships to your career and personal growth.
How Gates Are Determined
Your gates are activated based on the positions of the planets at the time of your birth and approximately three months before your birth (representing your conscious and unconscious design). Each planet activates a specific gate, adding its influence to the energy expressed by that gate.
Clearing the Energy of Your Gates
Over time, gates can hold energetic blockages due to conditioning, trauma, or external influences. Clearing these blockages allows the energy to flow freely, enabling you to express your gifts and live in alignment.
Benefits of Clearing Gate Energy:
Rediscovering Your Gifts: Clearing blocks lets you fully embody the positive aspects of your gates.
Emotional Freedom: Releasing conditioned patterns tied to certain gates fosters inner peace.
Improved Relationships: Balanced gate energy enhances how you interact with others.
Life Alignment: When your gates are clear, you can live with greater ease and purpose.
Techniques for Clearing Gates:
Energy Healing Modalities: Practices like ThetaHealing®, Reiki, or the Body Code can clear stagnant energy.
Breathwork and Meditation: These tools help release emotional residue stored in your gates.
Deconditioning Practices: Identifying and releasing societal or familial conditioning restores the natural expression of your gates.
